Macaca mulatta, belonging to the subfamily of macaques in the family of monkeys, is a primate species active in primitive forests in Asia, including Hailuogou. The Hailuogou macaque, also known as the Tibetan macaque (scientific name Macaca thibetana, English for Tibetan macaque, Stump tailed Macaque), belongs to the Sichuan short tailed macaque and is a second-class protected animal in China. It is also a highly ornamental wild animal.
Arriving at Hailuogou, when you enter the No.1 campsite, you will inadvertently and unconsciously meet a group of monkeys on the road, in the forest, by the creek, near the hot spring pool.
As early as the 1980s, the road only led to Camp 1 at an altitude of 1900 meters, and it was a single lane for logging and transporting timber. The Hailuogou Glacier Valley above Camp 1 was basically in a primitive state of no man's land. However, whenever the snow began to melt in late spring and early summer, some farmers would drive their domesticated cattle and sheep into the ditch to graze. Hunters would also travel with two or three people to hunt for animals such as goats, antelopes, bears, and deer in the mountains. Perhaps there are many similarities between monkeys and humans. The monkey population in Hailuogou has never been a target of hunting. Because of this, the wild macaque population in Hailuogou has not only been well protected and developed for a long time, but also has a harmonious relationship with humans. Whenever our inspection team enters the ditch and sees a group of macaques, they are naturally wild. Although they are not as friendly as domesticated ones, they are always ready to leave. At most, they climb up tree branches and chirp incessantly, speaking "monkey language" that only the monkey group can understand.
Later, with the increasing development of tourism in the Hailuogou Glacier, more and more tourists came to Hailuogou for leisure and vacation. The highway also extended upwards to Camp 3 at an altitude of 3000 meters. Glacier hot spring resorts were built in the valley, and high-end hotels replaced the inspection camps. A cable car cable car extending to an altitude of 3400 meters also passed through the melting area of the Hailuogou Glacier. The macaques didn't know what was happening here for a while? For the sake of their own safety, it is advisable to avoid them. They and many other animals once retreated to the depths of the mountains and lived a "reclusive" life.
The busy shuttle of cars and the constant flow of tourists seem to have had no significant impact on the macaques over time. Then, first one and two, then a group and two groups, the macaques slowly approached the hot spring, the road, and the car. Later, some brave people came into the room and became "gentlemen of the beam". In the Hot Spring Resort of Camp 2, you can often see some naughty monkeys coming to the corridor, near the window, and taking their favorite banana apple core Dim sum when people are not paying attention; Or approach the guest generously, approach the parked car, and ask for the fruit and food in the car and bag.
At present, the macaque colony has become another beautiful scenic spot in the Hailuogou Scenic Area.
