Moschus moschiferus, also known as musk deer or roe deer, belongs to the musk family, musk genus, and the original musk species (M. moschiferus). It belongs to the second-class protection of endangered species in China. Xiangzhang is a small and medium-sized herbivorous animal with ornamental value and high economic value, which is also widely distributed in China. They are clever and timid, with a light body and shiny gray brown fur. They are mostly active in forests at an altitude of more than 500-2500 meters. Lichens, pine vines, mosses, bark, leaves, and the roots and stems of some shrub plants in the mountains are all beloved foods of the Chinese deer. There is a sac like structure between the navel and foreskin of the male deer. When the male deer is resting, its sacs are exposed and open, and it secretes a fragrant glandular fluid that attracts some insects and ants to enter. Then the sacs close, and over time, protein rich insect residues such as insects and ants form musk with a special fragrance under the soaking of the deer glandular fluid. Musk is both a valuable traditional Chinese medicine and a rare high-end spice. The fragrant deer in Hailuogou was once a key target for local hunters to hunt. In long-term hunting environments, musk deer have developed a high level of vigilance, especially towards humans, to the point where only hunters can see their presence from a distance of several hundred meters or more. In my dozens of visits to Hailuogou for investigation, I have discovered the habitat of the deer countless times in the deep dense forest. What I saw at the edge of the nest was only the shedding gray and white hair of the deer, but the round feces of the deer. I rarely saw the lively and cute appearance of the deer up close. They quickly hid in the deeper dense forest before we approached.
